Fordham University recently hosted the third annual New York City High School Ethics Bowl on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, which attracted nearly 100 high school students from 16 schools in the region. The competition, managed by Fordham’s Center for Ethics Education, was a significant in-person event held at Keating Hall on the Rose Hill campus, with more than 50 volunteer judges and moderators, primarily consisting of Fordham graduate and undergraduate students or alumni.
Notably, the winning team from Regis High School continued their success by triumphing in the regional competition and earning a spot in the upcoming National High School Ethics Bowl Championship in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Dr. Steven Swartzer, the associate director at the Center for Ethics Education, underscored the eligibility criteria for student judges, stressing the significance of comprehending diverse perspectives and appreciating differing conclusions. By providing a platform for high school students to engage in in-depth ethical discussions, this event aimed to cultivate their critical thinking abilities and promote a comprehensive understanding of complex and relevant topics.
The event also offered a platform for participants to confront ethical issues through real-world case studies, encouraging them to connect these scenarios with their own lives and gain a deeper appreciation of the subjects at hand. Additionally, the competition highlighted the importance of considering a wide range of viewpoints and understanding the rationale behind alternative perspectives, fostering an environment that prioritizes open-mindedness and empathy in ethical deliberations.
