On October 14, 2015, Fordham University Center for Ethics Education Director Dr. Celia B. Fisher presented a webinar for the HIV/AIDS Network Coordination (HANC) on youth and parent perspectives on ethics in adolescent HIV prevention research.

Fisher presented with webinar with Fordham University HIV and Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Training Institute Faculty Member Dr. Brian Mustanski of Northwestern University, who is also her co-principal investigator on a federal grant on ethics in HIV prevention involving LGBT youth.

Adolescents make up a major part of the HIV epidemic. The World Health Organization reports that half of all new infections occur in young people aged 15-24. Because of their limited life experience and evolving autonomy, adolescents are a vulnerable group and their enrollment in clinical trials is sensitive and complex.

The webinar explored, with a U.S. focus, youth and parent perspectives on ethical and regulatory issues regarding participation in HIV prevention research. During this webinar,  Fisher and  Mustanski presented mixed-methods research on topics of adolescent research including waivers of parental permission, adolescent self-consent and refusal, understanding of consent, and post-trial services for youth.
